CHP’s public incident feed publishes the time, type, location, and area of a collision. It does not publish names, plate numbers, or any personal information, and this page does not identify anyone.

If you were in this crash

  1. Get the collision report. As a driver, passenger, or owner involved in a CHP-reported crash you are a “party of interest” and entitled to a copy of the report. We request it for you at no cost.
  2. Get examined within days, not weeks. Soft-tissue and spinal injuries often show up after the adrenaline wears off. A gap in treatment is the first thing an adjuster points to.
  3. Do not give a recorded statement to the other driver’s insurer. You are not required to, and it is rarely in your interest.
  4. Preserve what disappears. Photos, dash-cam, witnesses, and the other driver’s insurance details. Tow and storage bills accrue daily.
  5. Understand the clock. California generally allows two years from the date of injury to file a personal injury suit, and three years for property damage. Claims against a public entity can require notice in as little as six months.

What California law allows you to recover

Property damage. Repair or replacement of your vehicle at reasonable market value, diminished value where it applies, tow and storage, and a rental during repairs. California is not a no-fault state, so you are not limited to your own collision coverage.

Bodily injury. Past and future medical care, lost earnings and lost earning capacity, and compensation for pain, suffering, and loss of enjoyment of life. California applies pure comparative fault, so a percentage of fault assigned to you reduces rather than bars recovery.

Coverage you may not know you have. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage, and medical payments coverage, can respond even when the other driver has no insurance or too little of it.

Next step

Send us your name, email, and phone. We will pull the collision report for this incident at no cost to you, tell you what it says about fault, and connect you with medical providers who treat on a lien so you are not paying out of pocket while the claim is pending.
